Brescia

Brescia is a city in Lombardy, northern Italy and is known as “The Lioness of Italy” due to the uprising that took place against Austrian ruling in 1849. Being a Roman Italian town, Brescia has many interesting historical sites, such as churches, cathedrals, piazzas, castles, museums and libraries, as well as hosting seventy-two public fountains.

The Duomo Vecchio (Old Cathedral) for example, is a circular cathedral also known as La Rotunda. It was built in the 11th century on the remains of a different church. Many marble statues and famous paintings can be seen in the cathedral

The Biblioteca Queriniana is the town’s library. Many early and very rare manuscripts are contained within its walls, including a manuscript written in the 14th century by Dante.

Some of the famous churches in Brescia are Church of St Francis of Assissi, the Church of San Nazario e Celso, the Church of San Giovanni and the Church of San Clemente. Each of these show rare and beautiful paintings, original architecture, façades and cloisters.

Brescia also hosts a castle located on top of the Colle Cidneo. It offers a beautiful view of the town and the surrounding area and is a favorite recreational area for many locals. The castle contains several museums, including the Arms Museum where weapons dating back to the Middle Ages can be seen; and the Risorgimento Museum that celebrates the Italian independence wars. It also has an astronomical observatory and a modern rail road exhibition.

The Brescia Verona Airport is situated 20 kilometers outside of the Brescia. Although public transportation is good in Italy, hiring a car could be very beneficial if you are hoping to visit many sites in and around the area. Car hire can be found for very competitive prices. www.anycarhire.com would be happy to look into the options for you, giving you the opportunity to compare car hire prices in a matter of seconds, even allowing you to choose the type and model of car you prefer. Car hire is available from Brescia Verona Airport from companies such as Argus Car Hire and Holiday Autos.
