Brazil

Brazil is the biggest South American country. It is the only country in South (and North) America that speaks Portuguese and the biggest Portuguese speaking country worldwide. It is bordered by many other South American countries, including Venezuela, Suriname, French Guyana, Guyana, Columbia, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Its capital is Brasilia and its largest city is Sao Paulo, often mistakenly believed to be the capital.

Brazil being an ex Portuguese colony has a similar culture to Portugal, including the Portuguese language, the colonial architectural styles and Roman Catholicism, Brazil’s main religion. But, due to the large number of slaves that were present in Brazil, there is also a very strong African influence in Brazil’s culture, particularly in language, cuisine, music and dance.

Brazil is becoming very popular amongst tourists, with its main tourist destination being Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro is perhaps best known for its annual Carnival, which celebrates the last five days leading up to Lent. Rio de Janeiro erupts in a party that lasts for the full five days and includes much color, plastic, music, sounds and fantasy. In the Carnival parade, beautifully dressed men and women take part in Samba (a Latin American dance). Other street parades also take place during the Carnival, such as the Banda de Ipanema, which is a street parade of transvestite costumes. On the final day of the Carnival, there is a return to slightly more serious business in remembrance of the slave trade through Quilombo, which includes traditional African costumes and dresses. Mainly though, despite the serious religious and historical background of the Carnival, people come to get drunk and party.

Rio de Janeiro also offers a unique New Year’s Eve experience, where inhabitants of the whole city flock to the sea to give offerings and thanks to the goddess of the sea. They will walk into the surf in beautiful white dresses and give gifts of flowers, preferably white.

If you are looking at visiting Rio de Janeiro, or any other area of Brazil, doing so by hiring a car is a fantastic way to make sure you have the freedom to come and go as you please and you don’t have to rely on the (sometimes unreliable) public transport systems. www.anycarhire.com would be very happy compare the different companies for you, which will only take a few seconds.
