Boston History

The father of American jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes) once called the Boston statehouse "the hub of the solar system", but common usage has expanded to the now-current Hub of the Universe. (According to wikipedia)

From this very statement this can be deduced that Boston holds a very important position in America’s history. Boston has been the center for USA’s social aristocrats for centuries. It was around the 12th century that the city lost its prominence mainly to some other rising cities like New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

The city of Boston was founded in 1630 by members of the Massachusetts Bay colony. These people were Puritan religious dissidents and they had fled England to seek for freedom in a ‘New World’. Boston was equipped with an easily-defended harbor and as it is situated to the closest harbor to Europe- the city rapidly grew and achieved a leading role in the New England region. Boston even then had a booming economy resulting from trade with the Caribbean and Europe. The devastating Fire of 1760 destroyed much of the town, but within a few years the city had bounced back.

Boston's nicknames include "Beantown", "The City of Higher Learning" (due to the presence of universities and colleges in the city) and - the 19th century - "The Athens of America.
