About Bordeaux

Bordeaux lies on the banks of the River Garonne in south west France. It is a major city, home to more than a million people, and is one of the most important ports in the whole of Europe, serving many transatlantic routes out of Europe. The city and surrounding area is probably best known for the wine making industry that takes place there. The temperate climate in the area has ensured that there is a consistent harvest in the area, and the rich soils from the sediment laid down by the river means that the vines grow well throughout the year.

There are more than 10,000 different vineyards in the area around Bordeaux ranging from small family wineries that produce on an exclusive level through to some of the biggest industrial farms that produce hundreds of thousands of bottles of wine each year. Many of the vineyards offer visitors the chance to spend time experiencing all aspects of the wine making process, and many people choose to book car hire in Bordeaux in order to get out of the city and visit the wineries.

By driving south west of Bordeaux towards Salos you will find yourself in the Parc Naturel Regional des landes de Gascogne. This national park takes the shape of a triangle pointing inland from the coast and occupying around 2500 square miles of land that has mainly been given over to viticulture.

Roquefort in the south of the region is well known for its cheese, and the whole area of Bordeaux is a paradise for food lovers with many superb rustic French restaurants in the small villages where you can often enjoy food that is at least the standard you would expect in an exclusive city restaurant.

The Atlantic Coast of France that lies about 30 miles west of Bordeaux offers excellent beaches. The coast is not particularly developed compared to other parts of the country, however this means that the miles of golden sand are generally fairly quiet. For a traditional beach resort experience, drive to Hotel Atlantique which is about 150 miles from Bordeaux, and an excellent place to spend a few days.
