Birmingham History

Birmingham is one of the oldest cities of United Kingdom as well as Europe . The history of this town dates back to Bronze Age. Evidences have been found which prove that there were settlements in the Bronze Age.

The name of the city has a Saxon origin. In Saxon language the name refers to village or hamlet, the people of which follow a leader whose name is assumed to be Beorma. The Saxons invaded the land around the 5 th century, but prior to that- the village was a part of the Roman Empire . The Romans introduced many developments to the city.

The village was quite small when the authority of the village fell to the Normans . They actually started the real development of the place when in 1154 the village earned the right to have market places. Since then the village tasted many advancements under the rule of the De Bermingham family. Within the 16 th century the place achieved excellence in metal work industry. With the advent of Gun industry in the 17 th century the village started to flourish and the population reached to 15000.

In the 18 th century, Birmingham was growing rapidly to an industrial center. There were newspaper publications, libraries, recreational institutes and hospitals in the city. The 19 th century is remarkable since the town prospered and expanded to the Second largest populous area of Britain . Railway services were initiated too. The town faced adversities due to World War II, but it regained it form in the last century.
