Berne History

The city of Berne was first founded by the The DUKe of Zahringen before the Berchtold V in the eleventh century. The DUKe of Zahringen chose the ideal spot for the new city. He was found of the hunting and the city got the name Berne after his first kill of a bear, a bear (Bär in German). Berne’s coat of arms first founded in the 1224 and till from the bears are the part of the city. The old town of Berne is surrounded by the Aare from the three sides; the fourth defense is a wall named Berchtold. In the 1339, at the battle of Laupen, Berne asserted its new foundation of independence with Swiss Confederation in 1353 after defeating the united nobility of Burgundy. The year 1405 was the year of black evening, shortly before 5pm fire broke out in Brunngasse and tore through the timber-built city, killing around hundred and razed the town. The subsequent programme of rebuilding (this time in the local sandstone) gave the city much of its present character, including the street arcades, the surviving town plan, and monumental public buildings such as the Rathaus and the Münster. After six years of fierce controvercy in 1864 , the communal authorities voted by 415 to 411 to demolish the medieval Christoffelturm to make way for construction of Berne’s new railway station. In 1905  the  great scientist Einstein published his theory of relativity. The Hermann Hesse spent his years of world war I when the city was known as a hub of politically progressive ideas, hosting the anarchist Kroptkin and Bakunin. In the 20th century Berne continued to expand and its new arching bridges linking suburbs over the Aare, a planned district in the south with many grand mansions of 1920-30, now used most of them as the foreign embassies. To the best of the city , Bumpliz has mushroomed to accommodate the city’s most of the rapid new groth.
