Berne
Berne is the French term for Switzerland’s capital, Bern (in German). It is a tiny but densely populated town located along the River Aare. Berne’s foundation on the hill site is dated back to the 12th century. It has been urbanized throughout the years in line with a remarkably articulate planning model, and has buildings dating back from the 15th century and 16th century. The locals mostly speak in Bernese German but other languages are also used such as French, English, Arabic and others.
This old town has been listed in UNESCO’s cultural heritage since 1983 owing to its paved streets, 6km covered arcades, fountains and other historic sites. The most popular site in Berne is perhaps the Zytglogge a sophisticated medieval clock tower that has moving puppets. The rose garden which was formerly a cemetery is another impressive site from where one can enjoy a view of the old town. The most recent site is the set of fountains that were inaugurated in 2004 and are situated in front of the Federal Palace.
Berne also has a number of museums for fine arts, history, science and these include the Zentrum Paul Klee a museum dedicated to Paul Klee – an artist and it features nearly 40% of his art works. Then there is the art gallery Berne, the historical museum of Berne, Einstein House where the famous physicist Albert Einstein resided and many others. In addition the town has several theaters such as the Berne Theater commonly known as Stadtheater Berne, the Tojo Theater; the Narrenpack Theater Berne etc. The inhabitants also hold a film festival and other festivals annually such as the Busker’s Festival, the Queersicht, Taktlos Festival etc. There are also a dozen cinemas although films are shown customarily in their original language.
