Bergamo

Bergamo is a beautiful town at the foothill of the Alps in Lombardy, Italy, and is about 40km to the north east of Milan. The town has a populace of close to 120,000 residents. It is divided into two levels of the modern lower city and the upper city, with the lower being more modern and full of life, while the upper one has spectacular historic centers occupied by monuments and art works.

The city was ruled by the Venetians from the start of the 15th century till the end of 18th century who constructed walls around the city center. In the 19th and 20th centuries the town became part of the kingdom of Italy and grew into one of the most industrialized cities in Italy. The town’s climate is humid subtropical and has wetter summers than winters. One can get into the town by use of plane to the Orio International airport and then taking a bus which costs about euro 1.7 to Bergamo. There are many tourist attraction sites that one can visit while in the town, including the Piazza Vecchia situated in the upper town (Citta Alta), which is a wide and open space encircled by medieval and modern buildings, and is usually full of the university students around the fountain. There are also a number of bars. There is also the lovely and fascinating Santa Maria Maggiore church set up in the 12th century that has a spectacular wooden confessional that is hugely and extravagantly ornamented and looks like sculpture chocolate. In the upper town one can also visit the Rocca which began in 1331, Palazzo Dekka Ragione, which was the administrations city back in the days, the Battistero – an ingenious octagonal building and many other sites besides. The lower town is modern and here one can visit the Donizetti Theater and other modern buildings. There is also the famous Academia Carrara an art gallery that is close to 200 years old.
