Benbecula Airport is a tiny airport located in Benbecula Island off the western side of Scotland’s coastline. The airport handles approximately 35,000 passengers annually and is serviced by a number of airlines including British Airways, Flybe and Highlands’s air that operates flights to three major destinations. It is also used for emergency flights by ambulances as well as by flights supporting the close by missile trial range.
The airport has an extensive military history and was constructed during World War II. It was made the control midpoint for the Hebrides sky rocket range and aircrafts used the site in the 1930’s. Upgrading of the airport was done recently in the years 2001 and 2002. One can make it to the airport through the A865 motorway, which covers the entire Hebrides Islands and turn to B892 road that takes you direct to the airport. In addition, there is a bus that travels back and forth the airport on a daily basis that is managed by Herbidian coaches. The airport has only one terminal, which is open on weekdays from 9am to 4 pm and on Saturdays from 11am to half past midday.
The airport has several facilities though they are limited and these include a cafeteria that offers cakes, drinks and other light meals and is within walking distance in the airport. There are hotels as well that provide a wide selection of facilities such as high speed internet, meeting rooms, restaurants and a gymnasium not forgetting room service. There is also no duty free shop available at present but the shops that are there offer basic necessities and there is also a newsagent. The airport has long term and short term parking facilities in its only parking lot for those with cars.
Benbecula Airport also caters for disabled people by having adapted toilets and ramps that are well placed and passengers are advised to contact the airlines before their arrival for any special needs that they may have.
