Basel

Basel

Basel is the third most densely populated city in Switzerland with a population of about 160,000. It is situated at the meeting point of France on the west, Germany on the east and Switzerland’s borders, and has some of its environs in both Germany and France. The city is found along the River Rhine and is a major hub for chemicals and pharmaceuticals in the region.

The city is dated back to 44BC around the same time Augusta Raurica town was founded, and grew massively in the 19th century leading to construction of huge ports to handle its imports and exports. Though the city is underrated in the tourism sector, Basel has an attractive medieval town center and boasts of its numerous museums and theatres which are contained in such a tiny space. Other tourist destinations include its excessive festivals, bars and other wonderful venues. For someone who loves art, a visit to Basel’s Kunstmuseum would be a great idea as it has the largest art collections in Switzerland from the 17th century and modern ones. Munster is also a striking site with its spires and one can climb the remarkable Gothic towers to have a view of the city.

The Pupppenhaus Museum is a grand place for kids of all ages and has the largest teddy bear and doll collection in the world. There are also the Tinguely Fountains, the Zoologischer Garten and the Museum of Pharmaceuticals which has the largest and most mysterious pharmaceutical history collection in the world. The city hosts several exhibitions of classical and recent arts and the famous Vitra design collection. Stadcasino is also an integral part of the Basel music scene and contains a great concert hall where many orchestras are performed to an audience of about 1500 people. St. Jacob Arena is a huge stadium situated on Basel’s outskirts. Others sites include the city zoo and Scala Theatre

One can get to Basel via the Euro airport, by train, by car or by boat. Within the city walking is the customary mode of travelling, but car hire in Basel would also be useful for those wishing to visit sites at their own pace. Anycarhire.com can help anyone in need of these services by comparing the prices of car hire companies and enabling you to book before you travel.
