Red Tape and Visas
Visas are documents issued by the governing authorities of a country used to grant formal entry into the country during a certain period of time for certain purposes. Visas are granted through prior application to the destination country's consulate or embassy in the country of departure, or upon arrival. Sometimes, specialized travel agencies perform the task of visa processing for a certain fee, with the permission of the issuing country.
The need of a visa usually depends on the citizenship of the applicant, the intended duration of his/her stay at the destination country, and the activities which he/she intends to participate in at the destination country. Different formal types of visas are assigned for different circumstances, with substantially different conditions of issuance. The issuing authorities usually require additional documents from the applicant, providing proof regarding various factors concerning the person's stay at the destination country. Some countries deny visas to people suffering from certain dangerous and/or contagious illnesses.
Sometimes, a fee is charged for visa issuance, which is usually mutually decided by the national authorities. A visa usually grants a person entry only for a fixed number of times for a certain duration. Additional payment can be made to some authorities in order to accelerate the visa application processing.
