ANTIGUA Travel GUIDE

Antigua is located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. In the south are the islands of Montserrat and Guadaloupe, to the north and west are Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Barts and St. Martin. Boggy Peak is the highest point, located in the southwestern corner of the island and the nation also includes the small-uninhabited islands of Redonda, a natural preserve. The flat and tiny coral island, Barbuda lies 30 miles due north.

In 1684 Sir. Christopher Codrington visited Antigua to find out if the island would support sugar cultivation and over the next fifty years sugar cultivation flourished. The island had more than 150 cane processing mills in the 18 th century and at present only 100 stone towers remain housing bars, restaurants and shops. Africans were brought here, as slaves to work in the cane fields and the present population are the descendent of slaves. The inhabitation of the island dates back before Christ about 2400 BC.

Antigua Beaches

In Antigua there are 365 beaches and the majority of them rest inside the calm and protected waters of the island. The important part is to located beaches, which suit’s one’s taste and make sure to acquire specific direction. Some of the best beaches as follows;

The Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay are situated along the island’s northwest coast and one will experience resort beach.

Fort James and Deep Bay are the most convenient beaches at St. John and Galley Bay attracts surfers during the winter.

The four crescent beaches at Hawksbill are very popular, one of which is nudist.

The beaches on this part of the island are not so developed and the road that winds along the coast is Fryes Bay, Darkwood Beach and the beaches around Johnsons Point. The quite beaches at Rendezvous Bay is Doigs Beach located on the central southern coast.

On the southeast coast of the island is Half Moon Bay, is a National Park the best place for family outing. The Long Bay situated on the eastern most part of the island is protected by its reefs is also the best beach for family to enjoy.

Antigua Diving and Snorkeling

The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are surrounded by well-preserved natural coral reef and shipwrecks from the past centuries. The perfect condition for shallow diving and snorkeling is the southern and eastern coasts of Antigua and the complete coast of Barbuda. There is little current in most places and tropical marine plants and animals are diverse and plentiful.

The ten-day colourful costume festival includes beauty pageants, talent shows and music are exciting and range from the Party Monarch and Calypso Monarch competition of Calypsonians. Another revelry of this eleven-day carnival includes many smaller festivities including local concerts, food fairs, parades and cultural shows.
