City of Destination

The city of Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands. Amsterdam is well-known for being a very historically rich city. This is due in part to the fact that the city was spared from major bombings during World War II, allowing the older buildings to remain. During the Middle Ages, many structures were crafted of wood, which did not leave much behind over the years, though two structures still standing enjoy popularity among tourists. The city is set on canals, with 90 islands linked to each other by 400 bridges. The 17th century Canal Ring made trading in Amsterdam very accessible, especially to the wealthy. The city is popular with tourism and welcomes over 4.6 million visitors a year. Two items about Amsterdam that make the city stand out among other European destinations are the legalization of marijuana and prostitution. Marijuana smoking is permitted in Amsterdam and there are many coffee shops that specialize in the pastime. The red-light districts of Amsterdam are known for offering legalized prostitutes. Tourists come from all over to see alleyways and roads lined with one-room apartments with large windows or glass doors to display the offerings of the sex workers who rent these spaces, and the most well known of these districts is called De Wallen. Shopping is also a draw for tourists. There are many popular shopping streets that offer shops from fashion designers, small eclectic shops, and even street markets. Car hire Amsterdam Schipol Airport is offered by Budget, Europcar, Sixt, National Atesa, Hertz, and AVIS. Renting a car is a good choice for travellers looking to explore all the unique places Amsterdam has to offer that lie outside the inner city.
