Exploring Almeria
Almeria, as a city is very much different from other small cities of Europe. Whereas most other old cities are very rich in history and boast a lot of historical sites, Almeria has made its way into the modern world and has developed a lot. Thus it has much more to offer to its visitors along with its prehistoric sights and tributes.
The Crystal Cave
In 2000, some geologists found one cave that was completely filled with huge gypsum crystals presumebly in some abandoned mine of silver near Almería. The entrance point of this cave since then has been strongly blocked by around 5 tons of rock plus has complete police protection so that looters cannot enter. According to many geological models, this crystal cave got formed around the time, perhaps 6 million years back, during the Messinian salinity crisis. It is the time when Mediterranean Sea got evaporated and thus left very thick layers made of evaporites.
