Alice Springs

Alice Springs is the second largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Alice Springs is almost exactly in the geographic centre of Australia; it encompasses 148 square kilometers of land and has a population of around 28,000 people. Alice Springs is built around the Todd River which is usually completely dry. Often temperatures in summer can reach over 30 degrees Celsius – in fact, the average summer temperature is over 35 degrees Celsius. Conversely, the average minimum temperature in winter can be around 5 degrees Celsius.

The economy of Alice Springs is heavily centered around a number of mining and pastoral communities as well as tourist attractions like the Uluru-Kata Tjura National Park, the Watarrka National Park and the MacDonnell Ranges. Many of the visitors making their way to Alice Springs are visiting to take advantage of the many desert tour companies operating in the area, the biggest of which is Territory Discoveries.

Visitors to the area often pay a visit to the Alice Springs Desert Park which was created solely to educate them about the desert environment surrounding the town. Nearby, the Olive Pink Botanic Garden has a great deal of arid climate plants and trees growing in it and is also worth a visit.

The desert tour companies offer tours out to two National parks. The Watarrka National Park, which is 300-odd kilometers outside of Alice Springs but well worth the visit to see Kings Canyon and the end of the George Gill Range and Kathleen Springs. The second, Uluru-Kata Tyjuta National Park is further out at 440 kilometers south west of Alice Springs. It features the breath-taking Ulura Ayers Rock as well as Kata Tjuta (also known as Mount Olga). This is often reached by air travel.

Because of the vast expanse between tourist attractions, you’ll find a car invaluable if you’re visiting Alice Springs for leisure. By knowing what kind of car you need and visiting www.anycarhire.com you can ensure you book your car in advance and have a great experience with car hire in Alice Springs.
