Algeciras is a port city situated in the south of Spain and is the biggest city on the Bay of Gibraltar. The Port of Algeciras is one of the largest ports in Europe and in fact the world for cargo, transshipment and container shipping categories. While you’re in the area, the Roman furnaces in Algeciras formed part of the manufacturing of building materials for the Roman city of Portus Albus. The kilns were found in 1966 and were dated back to the first century. The Chapel of Our Lady of Europe is another popular sight. It was rebuilt in 1769 after the original building was destroyed by earthquakes and this building still stands preserved today.
For nature lovers, a popular destination is Los Alcornocales National Park which is a huge nature reserve where a great number of local flora and fauna can be observed, as well as a sizeable forest, popular for mushroom collecting and wild boar hunting.
