Algeciras

Algeciras is a port city situated in the south of Spain and is the biggest city on the Bay of Gibraltar. The Port of Algeciras is one of the largest ports in Europe and in fact the world for cargo, transshipment and container shipping categories. The city itself is situated more specifically on the Rio de la Miel and has a population of over 116 000 people. It comprises of a land area 86 square kilometers big and has a population density of around 1350 people per square kilometer. The population of this area began in prehistory and remains of Neanderthal man have been found in the area. It gets its name from the name al-Jazirah al-Khadra meaning “green island”. The modern name is taken from this name.

Naturally the city is a coastal town which means it has its fair share of beaches. The bigger of these are San Garcia, Rinconcillo and Getares. The biggest of these beaches, El Ricnoncillo stretches along the coastline and enjoys a wide variety of shopping, cafes and all the modern facilities you’d expect from a large beach. Often tourists make the trip to the Bay of Gibraltar to experience the whales that appear at several times throughout the year.

While you’re in the area, the Roman furnaces in Algeciras formed part of the manufacturing of building materials for the Roman city of Portus Albus. The kilns were found in 1966 and were dated back to the first century. The Chapel of Our Lady of Europe is another popular sight. It was rebuilt in 1769 after the original building was destroyed by earthquakes and this building still stands preserved today.

For nature lovers, a popular destination is Los Alcornocales National Park which is a huge nature reserve where a great number of local flora and fauna can be observed, as well as a sizeable forest, popular for mushroom collecting and wild boar hunting.
