Algarve History
At around 1000 BC, the Phoenicians established a series of trading posts along the Algarve coast. The Conii were established in the vicinity of Algarve in the sixth century BC, strongly influenced by the Celtici and the Tartessos. The Portimão, which was known then as the Portus Hanibalis, was founded in Algarve by Carthaginians sometime around 550 BC.
The Algarve was home to the Visigoths in the fifth century until the Moors conquered it in 711 AD. The Moorish occupation of Algarve ended in the twelfth century when they suffered defeat at the hand of the Portuguese. The Moors kept trying relentlessly to recapture the region until the thirteenth century.
From 1595 to 1808, Algarve was a semi-autonomous region, ruled by a single governor. It even had its system of taxation until the end of the eighteenth century. In order to signify the unique status of Algarve, Portuguese monarchs of this era were known as the ‘Kings of Portugal and The Algarves'.
In 1807, the Algarve was invaded by the Manuel Godoy's Spanish troops. It became the first part of Portugal to liberate itself from Spanish occupation in 1808 through a massive rebellion. It became a part of the Portuguese Republic in 1910.
But it was not until the mid of the 19th century that gates of Algarve were opened to the tourists.
