The Portuguese region of Algarve is located at the southern part of Portugal. This is the most popular place for tourists to visit in all of Portugal. The region boasts many natural wonders such as high mountains (Monchique range, which tops out at 902 metres), gorgeous beaches (over 155 kilometres of coastline), and nature preserves. The economy of Algarve is primarily agriculture and seafood. Fruits such as figs, and oranges accompany carob and almonds as some of the popular produce of the land. Algarve is known best for the sardines caught here. The sea is very important to the economy of Algarve in the form of tourism, as well. The largest industry in the summer months is tourism in Algarve. The beaches are welcoming, but they are only one draw to the region. Fishing, swimming, and boating are also great incentives for a holiday in Algarve. The different cities in the Algarve region all have their own personality and distinct amenities. Some of the larger cities in Algarve are Faro, Albufeira, Lagos, and Silves. Travel throughout the region of Algarve can be done by renting a car.
