The Algarve region of Portugal is the most southerly region on the Portuguese mainland. Portuguese food is very diverse. Dried cod, or bacalhau, is one of the most prominent ingredients in local faire. Grilled sardines and the fish-and-potato stew fish of caldeirada are popular fish dishes in Portuguese culture. The Portuguese cook with pork, lamb, beef, chicken, and suckling pig. Local favourites include churasco style dining, which is grilled meat on skewers, and meat stews like the Carne de Porco a Alentejana or the feijoada. Specific to the Algarve region is the chicken dish of Piri Piri. This spicy dish exemplifies the best in Portuguese cuisine in the Algarve. The location of the region on the water also makes seafood an abundant and especially fresh option when dining in the area. Nightlife in Albufeira is one of the best options in the region. The city has a main “strip” area with some of the finest bars lining a single street, and there is also a large dance club called kiss that is located outside the city, just between Albufeira and Vilamoura. The drinking age for alcohol in Portugal is 16 and local Portuguese wines are very popular. Red wine is the mainstay in the country, but the white is also quite good. Vino Verde is a type of white, which is actually green in colour. After dinner drinks such as port wine are popular, as well. The strong drinks in the country, 1920 and Agua Ardente, have a very high alachol level and should be drunk with caution. Car hire in Algarve can be a great way to drive around the entire region, sampling all the local dishes that set the Algarve a notch above.
