Albufeira Eating & Drinking
The Algarve city of Albufeira is a cultural and gastronomical gem in the south of Portugal. Seated on the coast, the city is home to many wonderful cafes and restaurants to keep travellers satiated. The local economy is highly geared toward fishing, making seafood a main focal point of much of the food in Albufeira and the entire Algarve region. The signature dish of Algarve coast is the Cataplana dish, which is a seafood medley that is cooked in a pan of the same name. Fish is very inexpensive in the city, making it a great choice for budget-minded travellers with grilled sardines being a favourite among locals and visitors, alike. Local fish include tuna, monkfish, mackerel, squid, and sea bream, all prepared a variety of ways. The annual Albufeira Gastronomy Festival is a great way to try all the fun food and drink the city and the surrounding areas offer. Nightlife is good on “The Strip,” the local bar and club street. The drinking age in Portugal is 16. Drinking in the Albufeira area is accented by tastes such as almond-flavoured liqueur and carob liqueur (Alfarroba). Portuguese wines are a favourite, with red being the more prominent choice. Portugal, along with Spain, also offers a Vinho Verde, which is a green coloured wine. Most locals drink wine with their meals and desserts. Port wine is usually an after-dinner choice, and the two types are Alentjo and Porto. 1920 and Agua Ardente are both very strong drinks and should be approached with caution at first. Budget car hire is the way to go when travelling to Albufeira. Airport car hire allows travellers to arrange for a vehicle before the trip to ensure all special necessities are handled. Renting a car when on holiday gives your party the freedom to come and go as you choose and will let you avoid issues such as fares and timetables.Eating & Drinking
