Aix-En-Provence

Aix-In-Provence is a city in the south of France built over a hot spring. It is about 30 kilometers from Marseille. Aix-En-Provence is located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region in France and has a population of around 143,000 contained within the 173 square kilometers of the city limits. The city was founded by the Romans – historians believe in around 123 BC by Sextius Calvinis. The hot springs in the area also share his name. The city is also famous for the Battle of Aquae Sextiae taking place there in around 102 BC.

Aix-en-Provence is located on a fairly large open area that overlooks the Arc, approximately one mile from the river’s right bank. It slopes, with the north being of a higher elevation to the south. The slope is gentle and the position of Aix-en-Provence in the south of France lends towards the city having a warmer than average climate for the area. On average, the temperatures in the coldest month, January, sit at around 5 degrees Celsius and in the warmest month, July, at around 22 degrees Celsius. On average, the city experiences a much larger percentage of sunny days compared to rainy days. The majority of France has an oceanic climate while Aix-en Provence enjoys a Mediterranean climate.

The main attractions in Aix-en-Provence are the historical buildings and areas within the city. One of these is the Cours Mirabeau – a thoroughfare lined with rows of plane trees. It is decorated with several fountains and follows the old city wall. The position of the thoroughfare is positioned almost perfectly to create two distinct halves of the city.

The Cathedral of the Holy Savior is another of the popular tourist attractions situated in the old-fashioned part of the city. It contains a blend of many different styles of architecture from 400 AD to the 1600s. At its center is a gothic portal with incredible carved walnut doors. Inside hang many tapestries dating back to the 1500s and a triptych. The Hotel de Ville is another building, built around 1650 and also contains breath-taking wood workings and tapestries and a clock tower built in 1510.
