Adelaide

Adelaide is the capital of the Australian state of South Australia. It boasts being the fifth largest city in Australia with an estimated population of more than 1.3 million people residing within the city limits. Adelaide is situated on the south coast of Australia – more specifically on the eastern shore of Gulf St Vincent. The city itself comprises of a large central business district with a number of outlying suburbs that stretch about 20km from the coast and 100km along it. The city gets its name from Queen Adelaide and was founded in 1836.

Adelaide, as with many other Australian cities, enjoys a hot summer and primarily Mediterranean climate with most rainfall occurring in winter. It is, however, the driest of all the Australian capital cities. Throughout summer, rainfall is light and sparse and the June is traditionally the month that experiences the most rain and hail is not uncommon in the winter.

There are a huge variety of things to do and see in the capital city of Adelaide. If you’re a nature lover, you’ll enjoy the Rodney Fox Shark Experience that not only has a small museum but also does daily shark watching trips and cage diving from the coastal resort of Glenelg. Other attractions include the Opal Mine in the city centre and several theatres including the Lion Theatre, Mayfair Theatre and many others. Contained within Adelaide’s North Terrace, you’ll also find a number of museums and cafés as well as some large malls like the Rundle Mall and Adelaide’s Central Market.

If you’re a sports fan, you’ll also find plenty to watch in Adelaide with the focus on sports in the city centred on Australian Rules football, soccer, cricket and basketball. Catch a match featuring one of the two local Australian Rules football teams – the Crows or Port Adelaide Power at the AAMI Stadium or watch the world class Australian Cricket team playing at the Adelaide Oval.

Adelaide is a huge city with the main route in and out by air being serviced by Adelaide International Airport, which is also Australia’s most advanced airport terminal. Because of the size of the city, you’ll want to hire a car to get around. There are several car hire companies operating at the Adelaide airport and Anycarhire.com can help you compare and find a great car hire rate in Adelaide.
